What happens if you blow a funded account? Four firms read
You lose the account and usually unpaid profit; HyroTrader says nothing is owed. Four firms' breach pages, read 18 October 2026.
If you blow a funded account, the firm closes it, and you lose the account, the fee behind it and, on the FundedNext, HyroTrader and The5ers pages, any profit not yet paid out. HyroTrader says traders owe nothing for the losses. The usual way back is a new evaluation; of four firms’ pages read, only Topstep’s describes a paid reactivation.
That is the short answer to what happens if you blow a funded account. The question is evergreen; the terms below are not. This desk read Topstep’s Back2Funded help article, two FundedNext pages, HyroTrader’s blog and The5ers’ drawdown guide on 18 October 2026. Any of them can be rewritten tomorrow, so treat every figure as that day’s reading. FTMO’s terms were not read for this post, so nothing here describes what FTMO does after a breach.
What happens if you blow a funded account at four firms
| Firm and page read | What closes the account | Way back | Unpaid profit | Losses owed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Topstep, Back2Funded help article (“Updated over 2 weeks ago”) | Express Funded Account closed for a rule violation | Up to 2 paid Reactivations within 30 days, before first payout; otherwise a new Trading Combine | Page does not say; a reactivated account restarts with balance, P&L, trade history and winning days at zero | Not addressed on the page read |
| FundedNext, help centre (March 24, 2026) and blog (July 14, 2026) | Daily or maximum loss limit, floating losses included | “Restart with a new Challenge Account” | “Profit rewards are no longer eligible” | Not addressed on the pages read |
| HyroTrader, blog (September 3, 2026) | Daily or maximum loss limit; account “invalidates automatically” | New evaluation at full price, “no discounts for repeat attempts” | Profit not yet requested as a payout is at risk | “No financial obligations for losses” |
| The5ers, blog (updated June 15, 2026), describing firms generally | “In most cases, the account closes immediately” | “Firms rarely grant grace periods” | Funded breach “cancels pending payouts” | Not addressed |
The5ers row is the firm’s description of the industry, not a statement of its own contract terms, which this desk did not read.
Can you get a blown funded account back?
At Topstep, under conditions. Per Topstep’s Back2Funded article, the Express Funded Account must have been earned through the Trading Combine, closed for a rule violation before any payout, and held on TopstepX in the new Topstep Dashboard, by a trader in good standing. Once a payout is taken, the account is no longer eligible. Focused Trader Plan traders cannot use it, and neither Live Funded nor Pro accounts qualify.
The prices, as of 18 October 2026, are $599 for a 50K account, $699 for 100K and $829 for 150K, before sales tax, each purchase “final, and non-refundable”. Selecting a daily loss limit at checkout takes $50 off. The trader has 30 calendar days from closure to decide; the article says the window rose from 7 days to 30 on May 29, 2026. After that the offer lapses and the route is the Trading Combine again. A reactivated account opens at the next trading session with the same payout rules and every statistic at zero. Topstep is careful to say a Reactivation is not a Reset.
FundedNext’s help centre is blunter: a breached FundedNext Account means restarting “from scratch by purchasing a new Challenge Account”. Its reset applies to Challenge Accounts, not funded ones. HyroTrader’s blog prices its restart at full rate, with Two-Step deposits from $59 for 5,000 USDT to $969 for 200,000; on One-Step and Two-Step that payment is a refundable deposit returned with the first funded payout, while Zero-Step’s fee is not refundable.
What happens to your fee and unpaid profit?
The fee that bought the original evaluation is spent; none of the pages read describes refunding it after a funded breach. Our comparison of challenge-fee refunds covers which firms return it after a first payout, which a blown account may never have reached. Profit is the sharper loss. The FundedNext, HyroTrader and The5ers pages read treat unpaid profit as gone or at risk, while Topstep’s page says only that a reactivated account restarts at zero. Our explainer on denied payouts covers the related case of a payout refused.
Frequently asked questions
What does it mean to blow a funded trading account?
It means breaking one of the firm’s loss rules, usually the daily loss limit or the maximum loss limit, and having the account closed for it. FundedNext’s help centre says floating losses count. HyroTrader’s blog says the account “invalidates automatically” at the limit. It is a rule violation, not an empty balance: the limits close the account long before it reaches zero.
Do you owe money to the prop firm?
HyroTrader’s blog says its traders “carry no financial obligations for losses”, because funded accounts are simulated and the only risk is the entry payment. That is HyroTrader’s statement about HyroTrader. The Topstep and FundedNext pages read for this post do not address debt either way, so check your own firm’s agreement rather than treating it as a rule of law.
What happens if you fail while still in profit?
The profit on the account generally goes with it. FundedNext’s blog says a breached account’s profit rewards are no longer eligible, with a worked example of a $100,000 account grown to $107,000 and still breached. HyroTrader says not to count on profit you have not yet requested as a payout.
Can you get a blown funded account back?
At Topstep, sometimes. Back2Funded allows up to 2 paid Reactivations of an Express Funded Account lost before its first payout, within 30 calendar days of closure, as of 18 October 2026. FundedNext and HyroTrader describe buying a new evaluation instead. Of the four firms’ pages read, only Topstep’s describes a paid reactivation.
A fee for an evaluation
Nothing in this post is a claim that any of the four firms is regulated or licensed; none of that was checked. What “funded” usually means is a simulated account, as HyroTrader says of its own and as our explainer on funded trading accounts covers. A challenge fee buys an evaluation, not a job, and a blown account costs the fee and the unpaid profit, and at HyroTrader, by its own wording, not a debt. Trading involves substantial risk of loss, and nothing here is financial advice.
